Article 229
Piracy
A person on a ship or aircraft who commits:
#(a)
any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, for private ends directed against another ship or aircraft, or against persons or property on board such ship or aircraft;
#(b)
any act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or of an aircraft with knowledge of facts making it a pirate ship or aircraft; or
#on the high seas, in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State, or within the territory of Eritrea,
#is guilty of piracy, a Class 1 serious offence, punishable with life imprisonment, or, in cases of exceptional gravity, with death, or with a definite term of imprisonment of not less than 23 years and not more than 27 years.
